BIG FISH DAY 2005 RESULTS

First of all we would like to thank everybody who took part in this years competition, it takes a lot of hard work in preparation for the event and what makes it worthwhile is the spirit in which the competitiors take part. We all hope you had a great day and enjoyed the experience.

This year’s competition proved to be probably the best since we came to Narborough. Thirty three anglers took part, and it soon became apparent that, although everyone was competing, most if not all were determined to have a day of good fun as well as fishing.

The weather was very accommodating. Not too hot, not too sunny, and only a little breeze barely rippling the water. Competitors began to arrive around 9.00 am to be welcomed by hot drinks. Banter started almost immediately.

The draw determined which lake to start on and everyone spent two hours on each lake, moving at two-hourly intervals. Anglers were competing for prizes in two categories, Biggest Fish, and heaviest overall Catchweight.

To begin with Rainbows began to be landed in quick succession and in all sizes, from “stockies” around 1 ½ lbs up to big fish, some well into double figures. Some anglers went looking for the big ones, helped by very clear water, others went for what they could get, obviously hoping that numbers as well as size could put them among the prizes…and this was the case eventually.

Early showings included John Jordan with a Rainbow of 6lb 10oz out of Willow, followed soon after by a 15 ½ pounder out of Ashford by Roger Smith. That certainly started a buzz around the lakes! Last year’s winner was only 11 ½ ! Others preferred not to show off their catches until much later.

More doubles began to emerge, almost all in near equal number, from Willow and Ashford. John Trow had a big fish take him from the point on Ashford right across to the far side, and down to the backing line, before jumping and throwing the fly. To begin with the number of flies hitting the water seemed to whip the fish up into a frenzy and a lot came out. Eventually, and predictably, it had the opposite effect and the catches slowed.

During the compulsory lunch break some competitors enjoyed a hot Pork roll and hot drink on site, while others adjourned to the Ship pub for a pre booked lunch-all part of the day’s outing.

Almost everyone caught by the finish, and just short of 500 lbs weight came out. The top three in each category were:
“Bruce & Walker” Challenge for biggest Trout Caught
Third Chris Patey 15lb 2oz winner of a £25 voucher
Second Roger Smith 15lb 9oz winner of a BFR wide Arbor Reel
Winner Shaun Johnson 16lb 7oz winner of a Bruce & Walker 9ft #6 fly rod.

“Catch Weight” Champion
Third Bob Keeble 51lb 13oz winner of a voucher for a day on Willow
Second Chris Lonsdale 59lb 9oz winner of a BFR Cartridge large arbor Reel
Grand Champion Sean Barnes 61lb 6oz winner of a Greys Missionary Travel Kit… and a lot of heckling from his mates!

Our thanks to all who entered and made it such a good day.
RAY & JAN
